New Toyota Battery Plant Near Greensboro, NC

In 2021, Toyota announced a commitment to investing in the research and development of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. This investment improves upon the current technology we have regarding electric vehicle batteries. The announcement to expand overall R&D also came with the announcement of another Toyota manufacturing plant in North Carolina. This new mega site will support our families and communities in the Greensboro-Randolf area.

Focused on producing EV batteries, Toyota of Greensboro is excited about what this new plant means for the area. Since the original 2021 announcement, Toyota increased its investment by $8 billion, which reinforces Toyota's commitment to electric vehicles. It expects to generate around 3000 jobs for North Carolina. According to Toyota Newsroom, "' This plant will serve a central role in Toyota's leadership toward a fully electrified future and will help us meet our goal of carbon neutrality in our vehicles and global operations by 2035,'" states Norm Bafunno (2022).

The battery plant will focus on producing batteries for hybrid and battery electric vehicles. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) represent two different approaches to using electricity to power cars. HEVs combine a gasoline engine with an electric motor, drawing power from both gasoline and a battery.

This allows HEVs to recharge their batteries through the engine and regenerative braking. This minimizes reliance on fossil fuels without needing an external charging source. BEVs are powered entirely by electricity stored in batteries, necessitating external charging stations but producing zero emissions by eliminating the gasoline engine.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is excited about what this new plant can mean for the state. This will be the first-ever Toyota electric battery manufacturer in North America.  Finally, this plant helps us transition to a clean future.
